BRITISH AMERICAN STAFF
FEBRUARY 2013 WINNER

February's winner was a slight departure from the usual sites we reward here at the UDA. The British American Housing Staff website is a hark back to the past, referrencing traditional values through a collection of toned colours and textures. Sepia images, placed via HTML 5, are used to create a montage, envoking a time gone by.

We think it's a beautiful example of how digital can convey and old and pre-digital age.

THINKING WITH TYPE
NOVEMBER 2012 WINNER

November's winner was Thinking with Type. A website dedicated to the beauty of typography. Written by Ellen Lupton, the site serves as an online guide to the finer points of type rules, essential for any graphic designer. Ellen herself sums the site up best:

"If ThinkingwithType.com were a carton of eggs, it would be filled with those created (and sometimes illustrated) by Ellen Lupton. The egg carton would be constructed by Christopher Clark. If you wanted to extend this metaphor, you might say that the egg carton was constructed with a generous amount of help from symphony CMS and the jquery javascript library. The beautiful typography on the outside of the carton was designed by Peter Bilak and hosted by the typotheque type foundry. The egg carton was certified safe by the W3C and constructed from sturdy, lightweight, and standards-compliant XHTML and XSLT."
